Back to the Future is an American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis, released in 1985.

The plot tells the story of a teenager, Marty McFly, who travels back in time in a time machine built by Dr Emmett Brown from a DeLorean DMC-12 model car. Starting out in 1985 and propelled into 1955, Marty, with the help of the "Doc" from 1955, must resolve the time paradoxes caused by his interventions in the past and find a way to make the machine work so that he can return to his original era.

The commercial success of the film led to two sequels, Back to the Future 2 (1989) and Back to the Future 3 (1990), forming a trilogy, and to the development of a commercial franchise on various media.
